A description is given of the experimental and analytical procedures used in a study of the thermal structure of the lower thermosphere. Attention is given to the correction for systematic errors, questions of operating procedures, aspects of statistical uncertainty, investigative limitations, and theoretical models. Results concerning the daily temperature variation are discussed along with a synthesis of temperature oscillations, and the mean temperature variation with height. The data presented appear to complement most existing measurements in the lower thermosphere in confirming that long-period waves, having primarily semidiurnal tidal periods dominate the structure of the northern midlatitude E-region.
