The partial reflection experiment is reviewed in terms of the evolution of experimental technique employed and interpretation of results. The usefulness of the data from this experiment as concerns the synoptic observation of mesospheric ionization is discussed. Experimental results from the Scott Base experiment are presented which suggest that a thin layer of ionization occasionally exists in 45-50 km height interval.
