The maiden flight of the Space Shuttle Endeavour is described in terms of planning and scheduling of the 7-d mission which includes the capture of an Intelsat communications satellite. Specific details are presented regarding the training and simulation efforts required to prepare the crew for the three spacewalks required to perform Space-Station assembly tasks and to capture and reboost the Intelsat IV. The flight also includes a protein-crystal growth experiment and plans to obtain imagery for use in calibrating the Air Force Maui Optical System.
