An early major stratospheric warming was observed during November-December 1987. It is shown that the response of the lower ionosphere over central Europe to this warming was a weakening of the winter anomaly; but this response was not as strong and not as marked as those observed in cases of major stratospheric warmings in the middle or end of winter.
