A close correlation of parameters of the Birkeland current loop (BCL)
and the auroral bulge (AB) is confirmed experimentally. It is suggested
that the deformation of the magnetic configuration by BCL currents plays
the chief role in the formation of the AB at the initial stage of the
explosive phase of a substorm.
