An examination of the development of geomagnetic disturbances on June 26, 1988 shows that, at the commencement of the explosive phase of a substorm, a disruption of the generation of Pi2 geomagnetic pulsations can occur that is a distinguishing feature of the commencement of this substorm phase. Fluctuations of surface pressure were observed simultaneously with this anomalous behavior. The unusual processes on June 26 might have been connected with characteristics of the structure and dynamics of charged-particle fluxes injected into the polar ionosphere.
