Altitude profiles of the electron concentration ne in the E-region obtained in the nighttime sector of the polar auroral oval during a magnetospheric substorm are presented. The electron concentration was measured by the method of a high-frequency impedance probe in a series of four rocket experiments performed at an interval of about one year. Calculations of the ne profiles have been carried out with the help of a semiempirical model for the conditions under which the experiments were performed. Analysis of the experimental data and the results of the calculations have shown that the maximum values of ne in the E-region near the middle of the polar auroral oval do not experience appreciable variations upon a transition from quiet to disturbed conditions and that the altitude of the maximum of ne is lowered by 10 - 15 km.
