The mechanism of high voltage discharges that has caused spurious switchoffs of high power traveling wave tube amplifiers is traced to intrinsic properties of high voltage wires. The mechanism described is of general interest since it is based on sporadic degassing along the strands of the high voltage leads. It is more connected to the geometrical arrangement of the wire than to its constituent materials. The nature of discharges that originate from any high voltage lead in space application is largely dependent on the way it is integrated into the flight equipment. Details of the insulation properties of a type of HV (high voltage) wire that has been employed in TWT (travelling wave tube) amplifiers are reported and integration configurations are discussed.
