An analysis is presented of the difference of potentials between conjugate points of the ionospheric F-region, induced by photoelectron fluxes under conditions of asymmetric illumination. The theoretical value for the difference of potentials along the flux tube agrees with the error observed in the conjugate photoelectron flux experiment on Atmosphere Explorer C; this suggests the possibility of measuring the photoelectron-induced electric field with only a small increase in the resolving power of the electron counters. The measurement of the potential difference together with precise calculation can yield information on the thermal-plasma density distribution along the flux tube.
