Two-dimensional optical images at 3914 and 5577 A from the Isis 2 satellite are used to investigate characteristics of auroras in the afternoon sector. Configurations are placed into three categories: diffuse aurora only, isolated discrete aurora, and discrete arcs connecting from the afternoon to the evening sector. Auroral electrojet dependence and interplanetary magnetic field dependence are discussed, and the latitude of the discrete features in the 1400-1600 MLT region is plotted against AE, showing decreases in evening arc latitude with AE increases. A diffuse aurora is observed when the By component of the IMF is positive and no substorm processes are evident, while isolated discrete features are not dependent on the presence of substorms and are observed when By is negative. The average AE value of 240 gamma is a factor of 3 higher than in the diffuse or isolated categories, and during the expansion phase of a substorm, the connecting arcs are identified with the latitudinally confined westward electrojet to the west of the auroral bulge.
