The [Fe/H] ~ -0.8 cluster 47 Tucanae (NGC104) plays a unique role in understanding the globular cluster system and the transition from halo to (thick) disk in the Galaxy. Previous CCD photometry of the main sequence (Hesser, et al. P.A.S.P. 99, 739, 1987) led to an age determination for the cluster. However, that photometry had to be combined with older photographic material in order to provide a color-magnitude diagram (CMD) for regions brighter than the turnoff from the main sequence. In 1989 we obtained new B,V CCD photometry with the 0.9-m and 4-m telescopes at CTIO with the aim of eliminating the need for a tie-in with (less reliable) photographic photometry and extending the CCD-based photometry to include giant branch and horizontal branch stars in the cluster. The new data add ~ 60 square arcmin of sky coverage to the original study and include ~ 180 evolved stars. This paper provides detailed comparisons with the results of the earlier study, and addresses such questions as the topology of the subgiant branch region, the magnitude difference between the red horizontal branch and the turnoff, and the existence of gaps in the cumulative luminosity function within 1.5 magnitudes of the turnoff.
