The collisional mean free path for proton-air interactions in the energy range 10,000-1,000,000 TeV are derived on the basis of data air showers gathered by a 1 sq km detector array. The array contains 150 one square meter scintillation detectors, six 2-sq-m detectors, and nine 25-sq-m muon detectors. More than 500,000 showers have been monitored over 15,288 hr of observation time. The array is located at 900 m altitude. The total number of proton showers was estimated by setting a threshold value for muons and electrons detected in individual events. Account was taken of the observed attenuation length and the dispersion in the zenith-angle determination. A computer simulation was devised to examine the effects of fluctuations in the longitudinal development of each shower on the mean free path of protons. The cross section of collisions was determined to increase with energy proportionally to a narrow range up to the 1,000,000 Tev levels.
