From an analysis of the occurrence of white dwarfs in astrometric binaries it is concluded that the birthrate of low-mass stars in wide binary systems some 12×109 years ago must have been dramatically smaller than the present rate. It is also stated that the total mass density in the solar neighborhood in the form of white dwarfs and cooled-down, hitherto unseen, "black dwarfs" should be less than 0.01 M_sun; pc-3.
