The apparent Hess diagrams for stars brighter than mv = 5.0,
6.5, and 9.0 are presented. Some difficulties for the derivation of the
Hess diagram (spatial density of stars as a function of absolute
magnitude and color) are outlined and results from an investigation of
the two volumes of the Michigan Spectral Survey are summarized.
