Even in an age of increasing spacecraft exploration, telescopic observations of Mars continue to provide new data and new insights into the nature of the Martian surface, atmosphere, and climate. Three major technological advances in the last decade have allowed telescope observations to increase our knowledge of the planet. These advances have provided new results on surface and atmospheric aerosols and volatiles, surface mineralogy, and diurnal and seasonal climate variability that often complement and strengthen orbital in situ observations of Mars by spacecraft missions.
