The extensive proper-motion-star spectral classification programs of the late G. P. Kuiper and of S.-G. Lee, which have provided spectral types for many hundreds of stars for which such information is presently not available, are discussed. Kuiper's work concentrated on the then-known northern hemisphere proper-motion stars of μ > 0arcsec.30 and on the southern (down to δ = -50°) objects of μ ≥ 0arcsec.50; Lee's work deals with the Lowell Observatory northern-hemisphere stars (≥0arcsec.26) brighter than mpg = 13.5.
