During the last twenty years, much progress has been made in understanding the late stages of stellar evolution. Of particular importance has been the recognition of the central role of stellar mass loss. It is now known that stars lose mass throughout their lifetimes. For low and intermediate mass stars, the largest mass loss rates of up to 10-4Msun yr-1 occur from asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. These are luminous long-period variable stars, which include the optically visible Mira variables with stellar periods between 100 and 700 days and the so-called OH/IR stars with stellar periods between 300 and 2000 days. The author describes the evolution of AGB stars and the circumstellar mass loss that occurs from these stars.
