It is believed that the theory of the tail presented here may be more realistic than Alfven's; reasonable estimates of the electric field in it are given. It is noted that Alfven matched the flux of particles into the neutral sheet to the charge separation at the neutral sheet in order to find E. This idealistic picture apparently furnishes an easier and quicker path across the tail than the paths considered here, which require a larger electric field to pull the particles across the body of the tail in the same time. It is shown that the dielectric current causes a flow of momentum from dawn to dusk across the tail. The geomagnetic tail as observed approximates a two-dimensional structure, such as assumed here, and this makes it possible to estimate the electric field in it.
