It is shown that phase trajectories in the space of concentrations of atomic and molecular ions interacting in aeronomic reactions converge to a certain limiting line: a separatrix characterizing the basic course of the recombination process for F-region conditions. The deviation of the Ratcliffe (1956) recombination law from the real limiting line is assessed, and an approximate analytical expression for this line is presented. It is concluded that it is only by a fortunate coincidence that the usual Ratcliffe expression for the recombination coefficient approximates the real limiting behavior of a dynamic system of atomic and molecular atmospheric ions interacting in aeronomic reactions.
