This paper presents a new model on the reduction of solar irradiance by the presence of effective sunspots. Conservative measurements are made of the sunspot pictures of Peking Observatory of April 1 through July 16, 1980. The solar irradiance variations derived from this model exhibit a high degree of linear correlation with the SMM measurements of the total solar irradiance and show not much difference in magnitude. An improved model of solar irradiance variability by the presence of effective active features on the photosphere is presented. Several problems that need further investigation are also put forward for consideration.
