The topside ionospheric density profiles over the dip equatorial station, Jicamarca are constructed by connecting the C/NOFS-PLP/IVM data in the topside ionosphere to the F-peak data from the ground based ionosonde observations. The reconstructed density profiles are then validated with the JRO ISR observations. When these topside profiles are compared with the IRI model, we found that the IRI 2007 model over-estimates the density around the F-peak during very low solar activity periods. Furthermore, when comparison is made with the FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC observations, the F-3/COSMIC observations are also found to be over-estimating the reconstructed and validated “true” topside profiles at different local times. The reason of the F-3/COSMIC over-estimation can be understood from a simple graphic illustration of how the Abel inversion algorithm in the radio occultation measurements operates under the assumption of spherical symmetric ionospheric density distribution.
