This paper is concerned with the superpositional nature of the daily geomagnetic variations and discusses the problem of resolving the variations into components with different prime movers. Orthodox statistical methods, such as factor analysis, may not be applied to the problem because they depend on the assumption that all the variates involved are normally distributed. The paper shows that insight can be gained by studying the day-to-day variability in the geomagnetic data, and that the variations can be resolved into convolutional components by factorizing the frequency functions describing the day-to-day variability. The assumption that the frequency functions should be normal is replaced by a weaker condition. No significance tests are employed, the different components being revealed graphically. The limitations of the method and the circumstances under which it is most likely to succeed are discussed.
