The probability distributions of the field of an electromagnetic wave scattered by a medium with a randomly varying refractive index are discussed. The parameters determining these distributions are derived for the case of single scatter when the field fluctuations are small, and the importance of correlation in the scattered field is stressed. Attention is drawn to the difficulties encountered by some theories which deal with the case of large fluctuations.
