[3369] Atmospheric Processes / Thermospheric Dynamics
Scientific paper
Waves in the atmosphere transport momentum and energy throughout the thermosphere, or into the thermosphere from below. The USU Global Thermosphere/Ionosphere Model was modified to study small to medium scale wave structures produced at high latitudes that propagation to lower latitude, or generated in the lower atmosphere that propagate up into the thermosphere. This study incorporates Medium Scale Traveling Atmospheric Disturbances (MSTADs) produced at high-latitudes that then propagate to mid- and low-latitudes, where they interact with medium- to large-scale gravity waves in the thermosphere that have propagated up from lower in the atmosphere. The interaction characteristics of these waves are studied with the high-resolution model, which self-consistently produces and propagates these waves throughout the thermosphere/ionosphere system.
