The braking effect of cold incoherent dust on the relativistic motion of a sphere through it is studied, starting from couples of symmetric elastic collisions against the sphere. The role of the surface friction on the sphere is discussed, then explicit expressions are derived for the braking force and the laws of motion. The special case of a massless sphere is also treated, showing that both in the case of very high and in that of very low energy the relative energy loss depends on the travelled distance, but is independent of the initial energy.
