A study is made of the relation between the lower limit of latitude
attained by quiet arcs in the U.S. sector during IGY, 16 magnetic storms
and the intensity of the magnetic field produced by the ring current. It
is shown that the equatorward shift of quiet arcs is closely related to
the growth of the ring current.
