A detailed analysis of Argentine Islands ionograms has been performed, and the results are presented. A very significant increase in the occurrence of spread-F and a reduction in the maximum plasma frequency of the stable auroral red arc (SAR arc)-associated layer compared to an undisturbed layer is found. Considerable spread-F is detected in two regions associated with the SAR arc and the poleward edge of the midlatitude ionospheric trough. These regions are separated by a region associated with the midlatitude trough minimum, where comparatively little spread-F is seen. A positive correlation is observed between spread-F occurrence and magnetic activity at sunspot minimum. A weak negative correlation at sunspot maximum is found for K magnetic index of five or less, and a significant increase for K of six or more.
