A knowledge of the intensity of the electric field in the plasma sheet is essential in developing a model for magnetospheric perturbations. This knowledge must be verified experimentally. Measurements of the magnetic field and energetic proton fluxes obtained by the IMP-8 satellite are presented which provide information on the electric field in the magnetospheric plasma sheet. It is shown that during the preliminary phase of intense isolated substorms, the electric field in the plasma sheet, 37 earth radii away from the earth, decreases by more than an order of magnitude and appears to be opposed to the large-scale magnetospheric convection field.
