We briefly review the current stellar census of the bright end of the K-band luminosity function in the central few parsecs of the Milky Way. New H and K-band spectra are presented for a sample of cool stars. The broad H2O absorption feature near 1.9 microns can be used in combination with the 2.3 microns CO feature to distinguish between AGB and supergiant stars.
