[1616] Global Change / Climate Variability

Scientific paper

To understand the operation of the numerous coupled processes, many quite well understood at small space-time scales, that constitute Earth’s climate requires multi-variate observations covering the whole range of variability scales from process scales (at least of order 100 m and 10 minutes) to climate scales (planetary and at least decades). A satellite constellation is the only Earth observing system that has the capability to cover this range of scales but many types of satellite orbits and instruments are needed to study even just the key subset of processes. Some satellite-based data records are now long enough (20-30 years) to study process interactions that couple the land and ocean on the longest time scales; the most recent 5 years has seen the richest variety and combinations of satellite measurements ever achieved. Yet the vast majority of satellite data analysis activities are limited to single instruments, sometimes only a few channels on a single instrument, when intensive (process-oriented) studies are performed, or to one or a very few variables when extensive (large range of space and time scales) studies are performed. Examples are presented of a few cases where the research results have greatly benefitted from analysis of multiple satellite instrument measurements covering the whole planet for long time periods: cloud effects on the radiation budget, cloud evolution and precipitation, land surface flooding. Some more possibilities are suggested.
