The effect of tilting of the E-layer on auroral backscatter is considered for the conditions applying in the vicinity of an auroral arc. Tilting modifies the degree of refraction, sometimes causing internal reflection, and this can explain a number of previously anomalous phenomena observed in auroral backscatter, including strong backscatter at apparently large aspect angles. As a result of tilts, refraction effects may be relevant over a wider range of frequencies than considered in the past, and the apparent aspect sensitivity and altitude of backscattered signals should be reexamined carefully.
