The notion of gravitational field strength is critically examined in this paper within the framework of the general theory of relativity. It is shown that this concept is strongly observer dependent in close analogy with electromagnetism. The results are applied to the linearized theory of gravitation in order to show that local Lorentz invariance in general precludes the possibility of a generally covariant analysis of gravitational perturbations.
