The photometric function derived analytically by Hapke (1986) is applied to photometric measurements in the Oxia Palus region of Mars in order to gain insight into the physical and structural properties of the terrain materials in this area, their wavelength dependence, and spatial distribution. The photometric evaluation is based on measurements of the surface reflectance for different phase angles in 325 training areas, selected on the basis of color enhanced Viking orbiter images. The method can be extended to all planetary objects having rough (vegetation free) surfaces, for which multidirectional remote sensing observations are available.
