We present our new 1.2-m telescope, called MERCATOR, which was installed recently at the Observatorio Roque de los Muchachos on the island of La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain). The Mercator Telescope will be operated by the Instituut voor Sterrenkunde, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. For an overview of the science goals and the instruments we refer to the MERCATOR web page: http://www.mercator.iac.es/. MERCATOR will be dedicated to a limited amount of well targeted projects that require continuous observations, such as the monitoring of variable sources, which requires a fairly continuous availability of a telescope. In particular, a large fraction of the available observation time will be devoted to asteroseismology. During the first year of operations, MERCATOR will be equipped with the refurbished P7 Swiss seven-colour photometer. This instrument was previously attached to the Swiss 0.7m telescope at LaSilla and has proven to be perfectly suitable for the study of pulsating stars (see, e.g., the publications available at the web page of our institute given above). Later on, a CCD camera will be installed for multicolour photometry in 12 filters, among which the seven standard Geneva filters and an R- and I-filter. We welcome any interesting observing proposals to be done with MERCATOR. Anyone who would like to participate in the exploitation of this telescope can contact us by e-mail: Conny.Aerts@ster.kuleuven.ac.be and/or Christoffel.Waelkens@ster.kuleuven.ac.be.
