The mean properties of the photometric orbital modulation of HZ Her/Her X-1 are studied. The maximum brightness within orbital phases 0.4 - 0.6 displays no significant secular trends over 35 years of the active state, apart from a possible brightening by 0.003 magpg yr-1. The moving averages show that the primary minimum is symmetric within phases +/-0.25. The secondary minimum is absent, in variance with previous analyses. The light curve around the maximum is asymmetric (max. brightness at phase 0.55). The scatter of the residuals of the mean light curve is largely asymmetric with respect to the primary minimum (smooth decrease of scatter within phases 0.2 - 0.6 and steep rise towards phase 0.85). It cannot be fully explained by the geometric effects of the precessing disk during the 35 day cycle. The role of the impact of the mass stream is therefore suggested.
