Variations of the sector structure of the interplanetary magnetic field with solar rotation and cycles are examined. Well-defined sector boundaries observed from January 1957 to February 1975 as field polarity reversals and published by Svalgaard (1974, 1975) are represented in a superposed 27-day Bartels format. It is shown that reversals from the away polarity to the towards polarity tend to occur in the middle of the solar rotation period, while the opposite reversals have significant excesses near the ends, which implies a two-sector structure within the solar rotation. Analysis of the epochs of the extrema of the 11-year cycle (1957-58, 1967-69, 1963-65, 1975) reveals a well-established two-sector structure, while a quasi-four-sector structure is evident during the epochs of the intermediate years.
