The absorption of 5.2-A photons in solar soft-X-ray spectra is compared with that of 6.2-A photons for various densities and column depths of hydrogen in order to determine whether there may be differential absorption for neighboring lines. A noticeable differential absorption is found when, e.g., the densities exceed 10 to the 14th per cu cm and column depths are of the order of 1000 km. Certain problems in differential-emission-measure modeling are eliminated by using a method of analysis that bypasses the mathematical complications noted by Craig and Brown (1976). An approach to a better understanding of coronal conditions is outlined, and it is shown how this method may be useful in analysis.
