The influence of geomagnetic disturbances on long conductors, such as telegraph lines, transoceanic and transcontinental cables and oil pipelines, must be evaluated both for the geographical conditions and the specific technologies employed. In the present paper, the impact of geophysical processes, such as magnetic storms, world-wide geomagnetic activity, and rate of change of magnetic field intensity, on some ground-based and satellite-based technologies is demonstrated. New geophysical effects, revealed by deployment of sophisticated technologies in space, which must be contended with to provide effective systems operation are noted.
