The acceleration of plasma in the current sheets downstream from magnetic neutral lines is discussed in relation to both the dayside magnetopause and the geomagnetic tail. In both cases, the accelerated plasma is expected to form a layer adjacent to the current sheet on either side in which it streams along the field lines away from the neutral line through the incoming unaccelerated plasma. It is argued, however, that the properties of these boundary layer flows will be very different on the dayside and in the tail due to the different properties of the incoming source plasmas. The downstream plasma populations arising from these layers will also be different, due to the differing connectivities of the downstream reconnected field lines.
