The geostationary satellite GEOS 2 crossed the dayside magnetopause several times on August 28, 1978. The particle spectrometer provided observations of the distributions of electrons and ions with energies from 20 to 300 keV. Magnetometer data were used to determine the location of GEOS 2 relative to the magnetopause. The observed pitch angle distributions near the magnetopause were strongly asymmetric with respect to 90 deg and showed a strong field aligned flow along magnetosheath field lines.
