The large amount of data on the plasma properties in the magnetospheric boundary layers is reviewed. Starting with the global aspects of the layers, plasma parameter profiles in the various regions are compared and recent evidence for rapid temporal variations is presented. The boundary layer flow is taken up separately as well as the observed distribution functions. The plasma structure of the magnetopause is considered with emphasis on ISEE results. The observations are summarized in the framework of current ideas on plasma entry and transport.
