The EPOXI close flyby of comet 103P/Hartley 2 at 13:59 UT on 04 Nov 2010 showed clear evidence for a highly active surface emitting refractory dust and solid ice particles into interplanetary space, with multiple jets emanating from localized spots on the surface (Fig. 1). The evidence included a smooth space-filling coma dust distribution shadowed in regions by the nucleus, as well as a distribution of large individual particles detected as discrete spots and streaks.
