In 2009, the International Year of Astronomy will be celebrated and astronomical research and education institutions will participate in the year-long event's motto: "The Universe: Yours to Discover.” During the year a wide variety of events are planned including a coordinated, world-wide effort to engage the world's Observatories, Astronomical Visitor Centers and Planetaria in educational programming and public events. The US IYA Program Committee chartered by the AAS has set up a Working Group set up to accomplish this coordination within the United States and to connect with international efforts. The membership of this US Working Group consists of a diverse cross-section of astronomy and science educators selected to disseminate the resources of the IYA to the public through institutions specialized in delivering informal science education to a large public audiences. The Working Group will work throughout 2008 in preparation for the activities in 2009 with a primary goal of coordinating and adapting (translating) key IYA programs and resources for the broadest possible world-wide audience.
