The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) will recruit and train educators to be partners with astronomers on research flights in a program titled "Airborne Astronomy Ambassadors" (AAA). The International Year of Astronomy (IYA) in 2009 will provide an opportunity for preliminary development, testing and evaluation of the AAA program. SOFIA's education and public outreach effort is managed in the U.S. by the SETI Institute and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP), and in Germany by the Deutsches SOFIA Institut (DSI) at the Universitaet Stuttgart. Funding for SOFIA is provided by NASA and the German Aerospace Agency (DLR).
