I revisit the problem of the two-tone appearance of the large satellites of Saturn following the recent Cassini spacecraft observations, which provided compelling evidence of a thermophysical model proposed by Ian Axford and me, in 1974, to explain this phenomenon in connection with Iapetus, where it is most pronounced. There we also argued that the observed, less-pronounced two-tone appearances of the satellites Tethys, Dione and Rhea, which are in the sense opposite to that of Iapetus was a consequence of their being inside the planetary magnetopause, while Iapetus was outside. While the earlier (1974) model invoked (charged) exogenic dust, a more recent model by Axford and me in 2008 considered the (charged) volcanic dust originating inside the planetary magnetopause. I conclude by discussing directions for future research.
