Condensation of solid hydrogen is investigated for contracting interstellar clouds of various masses by taking into account the interaction between grains and gas particles (assuming different grain models) in determining the grain temperature. It is found that even with core-mantle grains, with maximum possible impurity effect and with rather low saturation pressure use by Hoyle, Wickramasinghe and Reddish only 1.1 per cent of hydrogen condenses in the cloud of 10^3M_&sun; and the contraction is not affected significantly by the condensation. About 11 per cent of hydrogen condenses in a protostar of 1 M_&sun; with the same grain model and saturation pressure. The protostar becomes opaque to thermal radiation at rather low density, however, it contracts nearly freely until hydrogen is fully ionized.
