We present results from the first ever comprehensive statistical study of the spatiotemporal behavior of the field-aligned currents. We use data obtained by the Science and Technology 5 (ST5) mission which consisted of three identical spacecraft making simultaneous measurements of the magnetic field perturbations at three points along the same orbit. The separation of the spacecrafts varied throughout the mission from seconds to about 12 minutes. We have performed a comprehensive analysis of the entire dataset. We identified more than 4000 satellite pairs of auroral oval crossings and determined the coherence between the two sets of satellite observations. By taking advantage of the variable inter-satellite separation we have determined the coherence as a function of field-aligned scale size and satellite separation. This 2D coherence distribution provides information of the spatiotemporal characteristics of the field-aligned current system.
