THEMIS satellite observations indicate that parallel electric fields are often the dominate component of the electric field signal in the magnetotail during magnetically active periods. Parallel electric field signals have revealed that double layers and electron phase-space holes are in force in the magnetotail and that other plasma structures and/or plasma waves carry substantial parallel electric fields. These parallel electric fields are observed during bursty bulk flow events / dipolarization fronts and at plasma sheet boundary layer, almost always during periods of strong magnetic fluctuations. These observations imply that strongly nonlinear and kinetic behavior is intrinsic to the magnetic field lines that connect to the Earth’s aurora. I show examples of strong parallel electric fields and discuss the possibility that parallel electric fields may be important in de-tangling magnetic field lines after reconnection and be responsible for subsequent rapidly progressing the turbulent cascade of Alfvén waves.
