We propose to use XMM-Newton to study the origin of X-ray emission and the nature of flaring from a small sample of classical T Tauri stars. The forbidden-to-intercombination line flux ratio (f/i) from the CTTS TW Hya is anomalously low relative to the ratio from coronal sources, implying that accretion produces X-ray emission in CTTS. We will obtain RGS spectra to study the f/i ratio from CTTSs. In the same pointings, we will use EPIC and the UVM2 filter on the OM to study flaring from our sources. Flaring due to accretion will produce enhanced NUV and X-ray emission, while flaring due to coronal activity will not significantly change the NUV emission.
