We propose to use XMM-Newton to pin down the nature of the newly discovered INTEGRAL transient IGR J17331-2406. Following the announcement of the discovery of the source, we triggered our Target of Opportunity programme with the Nordic Optical Telescope and obtained images in the U, B, V, R and i filters over two consecutive nights, with an additional third night during the following week. However, the INTEGRAL error circle is 2', and as the source is towards the Galactic Centre, there are thousands of potential counterparts. With XMM-Newton we propose to identify X-ray sources within the INTEGRAL error circle and correlate them with viable counterparts in our NOT images. In addition, XMM-Newton will provide crucial clues to the soft X-ray nature of IGR J17331-2406 which is still unknown.
